Social media creates a two-way connection between you and your community. Unlike your business website that basically informs the public of your business portfolio, social media allows your to build relationship with the public through interaction. You connect with people on their level by answering questions, sharing promotional deals, offering solutions to problems, and gaining adequate feedback.

Not only do you increase your interaction with your community, but you also gain access to them through various social devices. You aren’t limited to connecting through a computer. Social media keeps users connected through Blackberry devices, iPods or iPhones, and various other electronic forms of communication. This enables you to reach your audience no matter their location.

The Bad
Facebook alone has over 350,000 million users–many of whom sign in daily. This causes creates issues when trying to capture your audiences attention. As people ad content to social media sites, it becomes increasingly difficult to gain attention long enough to make a connection. This shouldn’t deter you from using social media marketing as a means to build business relations. A great majority of social media users feel it is imperative for companies to have a presence in the realm of social media networks.

You can avoid getting lost in the shuffle by publishing high quality, relevant content often. Keep your social media pages fresh and respond to viewers feedback. No other form of marketing allows followers to have a say in your business. Listen to your community and reward their advice by taking it to heart and using it to grow a better business.

The Ugly
Social media allows you to connect with your audience on a deeper, more meaningful level. Followers enjoy interacting through blog comments, working through how-to processes right along with videos, and a number of other ways. This is a great boost for your business.

However, a downside is that users sometimes steal content and marketing it as their own. Taking someone’s content,, or misrepresenting your own content is simply a bad business practice. If you want to share content of others, exchange links, Tweet about it, or add social bookmarks.

Consequently, mixing business with your personal life is also a bad practice. Keep all business social media separate from your personal social networking. Maintain a formal, yet approachable presence and interact with your audience as an authority on your niche.
