Social Media Marketing vs Traditional Marketing

by MarcPickren on February 22, 2010

When designing a marketing campaign for your business, there are several strategies that can be employed. Effective marketing is essential for any business to garner new clientele. Problem is, many individuals are relying on outdated marketing strategies and their target audience is not being reached. This dilemma can be resolved by simply changing your marketing strategy.

Nowadays it seems that everyone and their mother has a Twitter, Facebook, and/or a MySpace page. Social media networks are incorporated into practically every aspect of our lives. It is no wonder that the corporate world has established ways to utilize the world of social media to their benefit.
Business ventures of all fields and sizes are utilizing social media marketing on a day to day basis. When
compared to traditional marketing strategies, how does social media marketing differ?

Traditional Marketing is Old Hat

The digital age has taken hold of society making traditional marketing strategies nearly unfeasible. While purchasing advertising time on television and radio stations may generate some results, most traditional marketing techniques are useless. However, it is not the outlet itself that makes traditional marketing ineffective. The truth of the matter is that it is the theory behind traditional marketing that makes it less effective when compared to social media marketing.
Traditional marketing relies on the advertising itself to get the jest of its message to the potential consumer. In traditional marketing, there is no emphasis on the consumer itself. This makes traditional marketing one-sided and flat to younger generations.

Social Media Marketing Engages

Unlike its predecessor, social media marketing is about “getting to know” your potential customer. By utilizing social media sites such as Twitter and Facebook, you give your business a personality. Potential and current customers can interact with you on a more personal level. Blogging and “Tweeting” allow these individuals the opportunity to voice their opinions about your services or products in a casual manner.

Instant Gratification

When comparing traditional marketing campaigns to social media marketing campaigns, the results of the latter can be seen almost instantaneously. Forums, group postings, and Tweets can garner results on a much faster level. With traditional marketing campaigns, one must wait for the numbers to come back which will then be analyzed to track results.

Cost Factors

Purchasing ad space in print publications, and airtime on either radio or television networks can be pricey. Same goes for billboard rentals and direct mailing. When traditional marketing and social media marketing are compared, there is no competition in this department. Cost factors associated with social media marketing are practically nothing. In fact most sites are free to join, and the only costs associated would stem from internet access, labor, and advertising if you opted to utilize the site’s service.

Conclusion

While traditional marketing is still capable of targeting a specific demographic, it is not nearly as effective as social media marketing. However, and ideal marketing campaign would incorporate aspects of both marketing strategies to incorporate as many potential consumers as possible.
If choosing only one marketing strategy, social media marketing would be the most plausible course of action. Social media marketing offers a higher return rate in a much faster time frame. Additionally, social media marketing reaches comparable levels of potential consumers when compared to television and radio.

Interesting post Marc. I agree that social media marketing becomes more effective due to aiming for individual contacts and actually giving value to their input.

However a lot of companies don’t seem to be able to grasp the tool that is social media in such a way that it becomes effective for them. Building a good network through social media takes a lot of time, especially if you’re a new player on the market. Which I imagine can work as a “turn off” for lack of a better term and they simply return to what is familiar to them.

Where do you think corporations make their mistakes in relation to social media and why?

Jos Vennik, thank you for commenting on my post, it’s always nice to hear from my readers.

As for social media becoming a “turn off” for some companies, you’re absolutely right, it has happen and it will continue to happen for some companies. It takes a lot of time and a lot of effort to get into the “social media” groove of the new age marketing. To answer your question briefly, I think corporations make their mistake by thinking social media marketing will happen over night. Though social media marketing is faster and more instantaneous that traditional marketing, it still takes time for consumers to find you, become interested in you, the fall in love with you which then results in returning customers.

This makes me think of the Guns and Roses song, ‘Patience’,
“Need a little patience,
Just a little patience, yeah
Some more patience
I’ve been walking these streets at night
Just trying to get it right (Need some patience)
It’s hard to see with so many around
You know I don’t like being stuck in a crowd (Could use some patience, yeah)
And the streets don’t change but maybe the name
I ain’t got time for the game
‘Cause I need you (Patience, yeah)
Yeah, yeah well I need you
Oh, I need you (Take some patience)
Whoa, I need you (Just a little patience is all we need)”

Jos, I hope this answered your question. Have a great day!

I agree I believe that in an aspect Social Media will in the near future have a greater life spand than traditional marketing in the near futre. Due to the fact that more and more business/ companies are adding social media as key to their success. Now a days you cant watch a television commerical or news without them saying “follower us on Twitter”. Business created fan pages on Facebooks to target their consumers/customers. I say that companies are now open to the public in regards to what they are doing and are finally listening to us customers for instant feedback to better their products or services.

Thanks Mr. Joseph for the comment! I always love hearing from my readers. And I agree, I think instant feedback provides companies with the ability to tweak their products immediate to adhere to the consumers demands, and social media marketing is exactly what is going to get us there.
