Work Smarter By Improving Your Time Management

by MarcPickren on September 2, 2010

It does not matter whether you work in a home business or have a career outside your home, your time is valuable, and you more than likely feel that there is never enough time to go around. Between juggling your work and juggling family responsibilities, you feel pulled in all directions and may feel as though nothing is actually getting accomplished. The only solution to the problem is to learn how to work smarter by developing your time management skills.

To tackle issues with time management, you first must learn what all your time is spent on. This is going to require you to keep a list of daily activities. Every activity you do should be listed, such as checking email, making coffee, eating, socializing, and taking phone calls, as well as the time and how long each task took. Along with this, you should write down whether you are feeling tired, energetic, alert, or confused. Keeping track of how you feel will come in handy when evaluating the results.

After you have logged your daily activities for a week, you can sit down and evaluate the facts. Some of the things to look at are how much time you spend doing tasks that you do not need to do at work, such as making coffee, and how much time is actually wasted during the day. You will also want to evaluate when your most energetic times are and when you are most tired throughout your day. This can vary from person to person, but it can be a key factor in how you spend your time.

When your evaluation is completed, you can form a plan for better time management. The first step is moving the most difficult tasks in your day to the time of day that you have the most energy. Leave the smaller and less important jobs for the times that you do feel tired. Many people find that a lot of time is wasted on checking their email every few minutes. Instead, set up a plan to check your email at regular intervals during the day.

The plan you create for more effective time management should then be implemented. However, do not give up your activity log just yet. After two weeks of following your plan, start your activity log again. What changes can you see in how you spend your time? Are you finding that more work is getting accomplished? Have you effectively gained more time in your day?

The lack of efficiency in your job and home life can make every task seem difficult. By introducing an effective way of managing your time, you will find you have more than enough time to get your work done and have time to relax, as well. An activity log is a tool that should be used by anyone who needs to find more time. It can make anyone realize exactly how much time is being wasted and how they can accomplish more at work and home.
